The Connection Between Plumbing And Ancient River Valley Civilizations

What exactly does plumbing mean?

Homes across the world have a network of pipes going around the walls. Sometimes, the pipes are externally visible on the façade of the structure and sometimes they are not. but modern homes definitely need to have pipe work done around them in order to be efficiently using them in cleanliness and hygiene.

Plumbing is the science that deals with that branch of architecture which takes care of thedistribution of water and gas probably in today’s times and the system that is mainly responsible for the disposal of sewage waste from the bathrooms and the waste water from the kitchen sinks and appliances such as dishwasher and washing machine.

Now, if you have been thinking that plumbing at homes is a recent invention, you will be shocked if you come to know that plumbing is probably the most basic branches of architecture to have been developed and used effectively as early as in 2500 BC.

You can learn more about these at Plumbing Force.

The connection of plumbing with the world’s ancient civilizations:

We all know the fact that the earliest civilizations only blossomed along the river valleys. Whether it is the world most ancient Indus Valley Civilization or the Greek and the Roman civilizations, water has been and will always be the major determinant of where settlement takes place.

The best drainage system of its times:

Every history book worth its salt will tell you how well planned the cities of the Indus valley civilization were. Cities like Harappa and Mohenjo-Daro, which lie in present Pakistan are model cities because of the extremely well planned urban infrastructure.

The pipes which were made of earthen material ran through the entire city and particularly helped in maintaining sanitation.

The baths:

Around that time, whether it was in the Indus valley or in the Euphrates or the Danube, all the three major ancient civilizations of the world had one thing in common and that was a huge public bath where people used to clean themselves.

The most surprising part of these baths was, yes you guessed it right! It’s plumbing system. Because the water had to be kept clean since a lot of people were bathing there and the water inlet and the outlet had to be taken care of in order to make sure that the waste and the soiled water was leaving and there was always and fresh water coming, the plumbing system had to be extra ordinary. Which it was!

Archeologists are fazed today at the complex pipe laying and the scientific methods that the people in those days adopted to make sure that their citizens and the city stayed clean and consequently healthy.

What are the consequences of not having effective plumbing?

There is no rocket science in knowing the connection between insanitation and disease. In fact, some of the diseases that can be anepidemic because of less or absence of hygiene can be so bloomed that it can create widespread destruction of life even to the extent of wiping out an entire civilization.

The ancient civilization understood the challenge of the water logistics. They were fully aware that if they had to survive, then water is extremely important for them. Note that all the civilizations of the world that ruled the roost were the ones that bloomed in the river valley or on the banks of a perennial river. History affords us this benefit of doubt that if there were any more civilizations that existed in the interiors and not on the river banks they would have got extinct simply because of not being strategically connected to the course of a water body. There is no civilization worth mentioning other than the ones on the river banks. Thus the point is proved.

The survival of the fittest:

It is the survival tactic of humans to settle down only where there is afresh water source. Life at places where water is plentiful and the water can be devised to be used for home and maintaining health and sanitation and also letting out the sewage water could have been the wisest place to be.

Historians are also of the opinion that the earliest wars were fought not for wealth, crops or women. But the earliest wars were fought for the most basic resource of water. The victorious tribe got to settle at the haloed places and that is at the source of freshwater river or stream.
